Will there be fewer infestations because of the reduction in travel during the pandemic? Are bed bug infestations decreasing?  This may be the case for some travelers, but there are so many other places where bed bugs can be found.

Where Can I Get Bed Bugs?

There are several places where bed bugs can be found.  Bed bugs are commonly found in hotels and motels. While this may be reduced this year because of the pandemic, bed bugs are often picked up when traveling.  Take care when sleeping in hotels to keep your suitcases and bags as far as possible from the bed and any upholstered furniture.  We would even recommend that you place your suitcase on a luggage rack or in the bathtub.

Bed bugs can also be picked up from used furniture or any secondhand item.  We love thrift shopping, but we are careful to inspect items we bring home as well as washing and drying clothing items as soon as we get home.

Be prepared to inspect for bed bugs!

Bed bugs can also be found in stores, movie theaters, and schools, churches, hospitals and public transportation.  We have written previous blogs about bed bugs in the subways in NYC as well as Uber and Lyft cars in Texas.  And these are not isolated events.

How Bad is the Bed Bug Problem?

Over the past few decades, since the turn of the century, bed bug infestations have exploded exponentially!  According to an article in the NY Times, in just five years, annual complaints about bed bugs in NYC rose from 537 to 10, 985 in a 5 year period.  And worldwide, the number of infestations has increased by 4500 percent.  That is a lot of bed bugs!!
